It was the Goelet family's gift of Ochre Court to the Religious Sisters of Mercy in 1947 that established Salve Regina. The stately 50-room mansion was the entire college for the first few years of the University's existence. The original 58 students lived on the third floor, attended classes on the second, studied and dined on the first, and snacked and purchased books in the basement. The eight Sisters of Mercy who made up the faculty established their own modest living area in the servants' quarters.

In this interview conducted via Zoom, Jane (Brodie) Pellegrino, class of 1968, remembers her time at Salve Regina, including the leadership of the Sisters of Mercy who taught, served "in loco parentis" and enforced (or overlooked) rules regarding dress and male visitors. Jane recalls experiences with faculty such as professor of chemistry Asciano DiPippo and Sister Mary Philemon. She also reminisced about the Sisters Mary Eloise and Mary Jean Tobin, who in addition to teaching, were dorm mothers. Jane recalls major events that happened during her time at Salve and shortly after, such as the assasinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy, the Czech Spring and the Chicago Convention, and hypothesized about the difference in cultural attitudes between her class, graduating in May 1968, and those who came in the years after.

In this interview, Sister Betty recalls the experience of attending Salve as a young Sister of Mercy, of living in convents in St. Mary Academy Bayview in East Providence and St. Mary's on Spring Street in Newport. Sister Betty recounts how the young sisters weren't allowed to socialize with the lay students outside of class, but as a chemistry major, she was in long labs with students she became friends. During her interview she describes what was special about Salve Regina in the late sixties, a "haven," her participation in an anti-racism march in Newport and the connection of the Sisters of Mercy and the Mercy critical concerns to social justice movements, what Mercy and the Salve mission means and how it's being lived at Salve Regina today, when there are only two Sisters on campus.
